Habitat of the Month:
Mangroves

Mangroves are one of the most biologically diverse forests in the world and often referred to as the "rainforests by the sea". A vital habitat for the oceans, providing food, shelter from predators and nursery areas for fish, birds, crustaceans and other marine life, mangrove forests stabilize the coastline, reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides.

Mangrove plants have a tangle of roots which are often exposed above water, leading to the nickname "walking trees." The roots of mangrove plants are adapted to filter salt water, and their leaves can excrete salt, allowing them to survive where other land plants cannot.

Today mangrove forests are one of the most threatened habitats in the world due to human impact such as coastal development and pollution.

You can help save mangrove habitats

  1. Donate to organizations working to raise awareness and research such as PangeaSeed, the IUCN and Conservation International.

  2. Advocate stronger global and regional action to protect mangrove habitats and the animals that call them Home.

  3. Support the establishment and protection of marine protected areas (MPAs).

  4. Recommend sustainable ecotourism and dive/snorkel in mangrove forests. This offers sustainable monetary alternatives to overfishing and habitat destruction.

  5. Think twice before you buy.  Do not support the trade of endangered ocean animal products and try to reduce your carbon footprint.

  6. Educate yourself, friend and family on the issues facing mangrove habitats and other threatened marine habitats. Act NOW if we wish to save our seas.
