"Throw a Drop of Water into the Ocean to Prevent it from Drying up" by Ricky Lee Gordon highlights the endangered whale shark. Whale sharks, the biggest fish in the world, are classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Their existence is at risk due to fisheries targeting them for their fins, a highly prized commodity in parts of Asia.

Artist Statement

"My art allows me to explore my understanding of non-duality, how we are inseparate from anything and everything. We are nature. I am you, and you are me.

Yet, we are disillusioned by a sense of self, and because of this, we cause harm to the environment and therefore to ourselves. Our natural world is dying around us, and the solution lies in awakening to this universal force of interconnection. My grandparents traveled the world diving, and my grandmother would come home with stories of beauty and mystery from the depth of the oceans so when I was old enough, I started diving myself and because of the travels that my art blesses me with I have been lucky to also now dive around the world.

The most awe-inspiring and magical moment was when I got to swim alongside a Whale shark off the raw coast of Madagascar. Watching it dive into the deep blue abyss and re-emerge through the suns lights rays is an image that is imprinted in my mind and heart."

Artist Bio

Ricky is a self-taught artist born in Johannesburg South Africa in 1984. Having lived and worked in Cape Town, he moved to LA in 2016 to study classical painting. He is well known for his large-scale murals that can be seen in cities all over the world, from New York to Istanbul and Madagascar to Kathmandu.
Ricky has been inspired by his experiences in meditation and Buddhist Dharma (law of nature) and therefore now his paintings explore the nature of non-duality and interconnectedness focusing on bringing to light relevant social issues and universal truths. His intention with his murals is to create artwork that has a connection to the people and the place in which he is painting.
